BARNEY THRILLS KIDS AT MEDIA LAUNCH OF CHARITY SHOW! - July 7, 2004Barney, the world famous purple dinosaur made an appearance at the Pantai Medical Centre today to the delight of the children there. His appearance was in conjunction with the media launch of the "Barney's Big Surprise" charity show to be held on Saturday, July 31st at 4.30pm at the Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil, KL. The show is in aid of McDonald's and RMHC's "Give A Gift of Smile" campaign to help less fortunate children born with a cleft lip and palate. The media launch was held this afternoon at the hall of the Pantai Medical Centre and was attended by representatives from the campaign's tie-in partners, Pantai Medical Centre, TV3, ING Insurance, and of course RMHC and McDonald's. About 30 children were also invited to attend the event. The special guests at the show were twelve children who have already been given the "Gift of Smile". These were among the 20 children who have already undergone the surgery vital to correcting their deformity. Dato' Dr. Ridzwan Bakar, Chairman of Pantai Holdings welcomed guests to the event while Puan Fadillah Yakin, President of RMHC informed guests that the "Barney Big Surprise" Charity Show is RMHC's fund-raising project for 2004 to raise money for the cause. Puan Alia Jally, Communications Manager of TV3, pledged support for the program by donating RM20,000 to the campaign from TV3's special charity fund. Dr Kim Tan, Plastic Surgeon at Pantai Medical Centre who heads the team of medical professionals performing the corrective surgeries, took the audience through the operations that have taken place and the very dramatic changes that the surgery has made to the faces of these children. In her speech Puan Fadillah said that " the dramatic improvement these relatively simple treatments have made to the children's faces, and to their lives, makes this a very worthwhile program for us at McDonald's and RMHC. As there are almost 1,000 children born with this condition every year, we would like to continue with this program to enable us to help as many children as possible". The highlight of the media launch was the appearance of Barney in person, to entertain the children with his famous songs and dances. Needless to say, the children (and their parents) were thrilled to meet the character, which in the TV stories, can only be summoned by their imaginations.
