Ronald McDonald House
The House That Love Built - It provides comfort and strength for terminally ill children and their families.
The Ronald McDonald House does far more than provide accommodation. It also provides support and comfort to families in need. It helps terminally ill children to lead happier and healthier lives.
The first Ronald McDonald House in Malaysia was completed in 1999. It is the second in Asia and the first in the ASEAN region. It is located on the premises of the Pusat Perubatan Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (PPUKM) and was built at a cost of RM2 million. Officially opened by YAB Tun Dr.
Siti Hasmah binti Haji Mohd Ali, the wife of the former Prime Minister on 21st June 1999, the facility has 19 bedrooms with attached bathrooms and common areas such as the kitchen, dining area, TV lounge and laundry room.
The establishment is run by a house manager who takes care of day-to-day administration and is assisted by PPUKM’s health assistants.
The main objective of the house is to provide temporary accommodation to families who have traveled hundreds of miles to seek medical treatment for their children. The costs of pediatric medical treatment can be costly for some families, and putting up at hotels or motels would only add to the financial and emotional burden. Moreover, these families would prefer to be as close as possible to their children. The Ronald McDonald House helps relieve these families of unnecessary burdens.
At the lavishly-decorated Ronald McDonald House, these families can have an air-conditioned bedroom for 3 persons with an attached bathroom, prepare their own meals, relax in the TV lounge, make use of the computer facilities, and most importantly, bond and encourage other families who are also in the similar situation. These families only need to pay RM5 a night for accommodation during the whole duration of their children’s medical treatment.
Funding for the Ronald McDonald House is from RMHC Malaysia's various fund raising activities. Ongoing support in the form of donations of food and drink is provided by companies like Nestle, MacFood and Havi Food.
